Cullyn's Birth Story

You made your way into this world very quickly!

About 7am I starting having {what I thought were} light contractions.  Daddy went to work and I joked that 'today might be the day.'  I gave Jordyn a bath and continued to get myself ready for the day.  At 9:30a we had your 39 week appointment {at 39w1d}.  Your OB {Dr. Olesen} was in the hospital for deliveries, so we met with another physician.  She checked us over.  Everything looked good.  I was dilated to a 3 and 60% effaced {so not much progress}.  I told her I thought I had been having light contractions all morning, but she kind of brushed be off.  We scheduled an induction for the following week, but in the back of my head I knew I would meet you before then.

After the appointment, we went over to Aunt Ashley's house.  I knew that if I went home I would just look at the clock and fret over if this was 'real' labor or not and when to go in.  So we spent the next hour hanging out at Ashley's.  About 11 I decided I should at least go to the hospital.  I text my OB and I knew she would most likely keep me.  So we ran to Walmart {since mama forgot to pack diapers for Big Sis} and then I headed to the hospital {with Aunt Ashley and Jordyn}.  Daddy was at an important meeting for work until 3p, so I didn't want to bug him until I knew this was the real deal.  {Plus, after having Jordyn, I just knew this would be an all day event}  However, he text for an update when we were on the way to the hospital and insisted on heading our way.

About 11:45 we checked into the labor & delivery floor at Mercy Hospital.  By 12:05p daddy was on the L&D room with us.  I was between 6&7 cm dilated, 100% effaced, and water was bulging.  Aunt Ashley took Jordyn home to nap.  At 12:15p Dr. Olesen broke my water {in an attempt to deliver you before her scheduled c-section}.  They started my IV and took lab work.  By this point contractions were getting much longer and more frequent.  I was so thankful daddy was there with me!  I started begging for an epidural, but we were still waiting on 'rushed' lab work to come back.

Finally, at 1:12p when I was dilated to an 8, Dr. Hart came and gave me the epidural.  I promised not to wait this long before coming in next time!  By 1:20p the edge was taken off, and I started requesting daddy take some photos.  At 1:40 we decided to start pushing and you were born at 2:24p.  You were 19 inches long and 7lbs. 5oz.

Your birth was so different from your sisters in so many different ways.  Not only did you come quicker, but you also took a while to cry.  I found myself less emotional this time, but I savored our first few minutes so much more.  We had skin to skin {Kangaroo} time and I nursed you right away.  I knew from the second you were placed in my arms that you were smaller than your sister, and although it wasn't by much, you were smaller.  Although many things were different, you look like your sister's twin {just 18 months later}.  You had the most beautiful lips, with a cute button nose, tiny little ears, and strawberry blonde hair...just like sissy.

Mama and daddy have been blessed with two perfect, healthy, beautiful babies.  Praise God.

2013 {a recap}

I couldn't end the year without a little recap.  Looking back at this year has reminded me how much we are blessed.  We experienced so many wonderful things and made so many amazing memories this year.  We are blessed to have done most of these with our family and close friends.  I'm also thankful for this blog and happy I {try} to take a few minutes each week to write down the highlights of our life.  It goes by in the blink of an eye, but it's truly the little things that make the best memories.

On January 1st, we found out H2 was {is} a Boy!  And we held a Gender Reveal Party at Seven Oaks Ski Resort in Boone.  January 28th to February 2nd I spent in San Francisco, California.  The beginning of February, we played a fun game with friends during the SuperBowl.  I took my glucose test and failed, so I was diagnosed with Gestational Diabetes. We celebrated Valentine's Day, we had a date night, we made Sushi at home, and Adam put his two weeks in at his job {which was a blessing!}  In preparation for Cullyn's arrival, we made the spare room a guest bedroom/toy room.  In March {at 15 months} Jordyn transitioned to a big girl bed, I learned to see who is pinning my things on Pinterest, and we celebrated St. Patrick's Day.  In April, we celebrated Easter. I {finally!} made photo books of J's 1st year! Most importantly, we welcomed a healthy Baby Boy, Cullyn Dean.  Jordyn Lynn turned 18 Months. The beginning of May, Cullyn turned 2 weeks and then 1 month before we knew it.  And we celebrated Memorial Weekend at the Lake House.  In June, Cullyn turned two months and Murdock turned 5 Years.  We celebrated Father's Day at the lake as well.  Jordyn got bit by a neighbor dog, we visited the Strawberry Patch, we vacationed in Michigan, and I went back to work.  July brought Independence Day and Cullyn turned 3 Months.  We spent many afternoons enjoying Summer Treats.  My siblings and our men went to Chicago. We celebrated my 27th Birthday in August.  Cullyn turned 4 Months, we found Free Little Libraries, and went to the Iowa State Fair.  September started at the Iowa Football Game over Labor Day and celebrating Dad's 50th Birthday on a pontoon.  Cullyn turned 5 months and we went to the Apple Orchard.  We cheered for the Minnesota Vikings and had a TON of photoshoots this Fall, too.  Jordyn turned TWO and we celebrated with an Ice Cream party in October and then got tubes.  We also visited the Pumpkin Patch and celebrated Halloween, lots.  Cullyn turned 6 months and we took our family photos.  We also took Koeff family photos.  Cullyn was sick most of November.  Murdock turned 5 1/2 and Cullyn turned 7 Months.  We celebrated Thanksgiving at my sister's new house and spent many days at the ENT clinic.   Adam and I snuck out for a date with friends to see the Keith Urban concert.  We started an Advent Calendar full of books and activities on the first of December.  Both kids got tubes.  We had Breakfast with Santa, cut down a Christmas treebought lots of Christmas gifts, did lots of Christmas activities, and celebrated four Christmases.

You Can't Do It All...

Such awesome advice…I try to remember things like this on those really hard days when I wonder if I'm doing the right things. On the days when I would do anything for a nap or I've spent 3 hours making snacks for daycare because it's 'the beginning of Fall' or 'May Day'.  Letting Jordyn stay up for two more books or one more song is worth it.  We try to make fun memories all week long because waiting to celebrate the big things would make us miss out on so much awesome!

If I Could Do It All Over Again

sarah and famOne of my dearest life-time friends, Sarah, is about to give birth this week to her third baby. Three world changing children known as Emma, Ethan and little no-name boy. (Sarah and Mike have sworn this new little baby boy’s name to great secrecy.  She won’t even tell me! Imagine that!!) Three new little lives in just barely over 4 years.
Sarah is one of my heroines.
Because of Sarah, I have been thinking about those years when my house was an absolute mess and yet my heart was filled to overflowing with gratitude and love. I have been remembering the years when the laundry never ended, dirty dishes filled the sink and peanut butter and jelly crusts were all I ever ate for lunch.
Do you remember those days?  After my third baby was born, I counted it a successful day if I was out of my pajamas by 4 p.m.  I realized during those never-ending, noisy years that a long soak in a bubble bath was in some ways better than a trip to Hawaii.
In honor of Sarah and all of those other brave young moms who have chosen to walk the very brave road of large families, here is some advice from the heart of a mom who gave birth to 5 and wishes that she could do it all over again!
1 – Read books to your children.
Start reading to them from the day you bring them home from the hospital. Read “Pat the Bunny”, “I’ll Love You Forever”, “Good Night, Moon”, and the Bible.  Even though they may not understand the meaning of the words … they will understand the love and cadence in your voice.   As they grow into toddlers and pre-schoolers, read “The Little Engine that Could”, “Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel”, “Amelia Bedelia” and the Bible.
When they are school age and beginning to read on their own, continue to make family story time a well-loved tradition and read to them. Read “Caddie Woodlawn”, “Carry On, Mr. Bowditch”, “Little House on the Prairie”, “Tom Sawyer” and the Bible.
At every age and every stage, read them biographies of men and women who weren’t afraid to dream big dreams and to live a life of resounding importance. Read them the biographies of missionaries, athletes, scientists and musicians.
And … at every age and every stage … read them the Bible.  A child can never read too many books.
 2 – Play music in your home.
Start playing music to them from the day that you bring them home from the hospital.  Play the classics of Chopin, Tchaikovsky and Gershwin.  Play the great hymns of the faith that thousands have sung before this little life ever began.  Play worship music that is impacting this generation. Play the worship music that impacted your early years. Play the worship music that impacted your parents and grandparents.  Play Broadway Show tunes and musicals.  Play your favorite music.  A child can never listen to too much music.

3 – Hold your babies.
You never spoil a baby with love.  Rock them and sing to them.  Quote the word over them as you quiet them in the middle of the night.  It is no small thing to be given a gift from heaven … treat your tiny blessing with heavenly care.  Also … may I just say … never underestimate the impact that holding and rocking our babies will have during the teen-age years. But I will get to that later.  Trust me when I say you can never hold a baby too much.
4 – Make a list of priorities. What matters the most to you?
A clean house or 3 home-cooked, gourmet meals every day?  Going for a jog or reading a book all by yourself in the evening?  Laundry that is done timely and folded when it comes out of the dryer or a beautiful garden outside your windows?
You can’t do it all … so set your priorities and stick to them.
Don’t ever feel guilty about everything that you aren’t able to do during this season but know that you are doing the most important things in life.
I remember one day when my highly successful, beautifully dressed mother walked into my zoo of a house filled with children. There were toys everywhere, the floor was sticky and the dishes hadn’t been done in days. That’s right … I said, “days”.  I was sitting in the middle of the family room floor reading books to my three boys when she walked in. I looked at her and said, “Mom, I am so sorry that my house looks like this.” She sat down on the couch, started folding the mountain of laundry and said, “That’s o.k., honey, you are doing the important things in life.”
At the end of every long, busy day, remind yourself, “That’s o.k., Sarah, you are doing the important things in life.”
Your children can never have too much of you. You are all that matters to them.
5 – Make sure that there is a lot of laughter in your home.
Serve green mashed potatoes on St. Patricks Day.  Serve hamburgers for breakfast and french toast for supper on April Fool’s Day. Read a joke every night at the dinner table. Bennet Cerf’s Book of Riddles was always our favorite.
Blow bubbles in the summertime and catch them on the tip of your nose.  Giggle together over the simple, delightful things in life. Don’t make your home such a serious place that it lacks the healing power of joy and gladness.  There can never be too much laughter in a home!
6 – Teach your children to pray.
Teach your little ones that God really does listen when one of His children talks to Him.   Teach your babies that there is nothing too small to talk to God about. You can ask Him to heal your pets, give you a friend, help Daddy at work and help sister with her homework.
When you teach your children to pray, also teach them to trust God with the outcome. Let them know that God is loving and good and kind and we can trust our frail lives in His trust-worthy hands.  Teach your children that sometimes God says, “No,” … sometimes He says,  “Yes,” … and sometimes He says, “Have patience.”
A child can never pray too much, ask God for too much or trust enough!
7 – Teach your children to dream.
Teach your children to imagine and to dream!  Encourage their little imaginations to go vagabond as they conjure up days of safaris and castles and expeditions into outer space.  Talk to their imaginary friends as if they were truly a part of your family. What fun!  If you can cultivate a culture of dreams when they are little … then … when they are grown … they will refuse to limit themselves with mediocrity.  Say things to them like,
“If you can’t do it … no one can do it!”
“I believe in you!”
“God has great plans for your life!”
“You are here for purpose and destiny!”
“You are an Esther … a David … a Paul … a Moses … a Deborah!”
When they are grown, your children will know that they had a mom who believed in them then … and now.  A child can never have too many dreams.
8 – Know that the investment you are making today will reap a harvest of blessings and solid relationship in the future.
Do you want to know what I believe, Sarah?
I believe that when you hold your babies during these busy, frazzled, too-muchto-do, I-need-some-time-to-myself, would-everybody-please-leave-me-alone-and-let-mesleep-years … that you are planting a lovely garden of relationship with this little one that will be harvested during the teen and young adult years.
When a mom holds a baby, it layers the baby’s life with a security that can be developed in no other way.  When a mom holds a toddler, it chases away unreasonable fears and builds a foundation of trust that no teen-age hormones can erode.  When a mom snuggles with an infant, for no other reason than just because I love you and want you, it builds a garrison of strength around that baby’s heart that no weapon of the culture can penetrate.
So as you hold little “what’s his name”, Sarah, know that someday he will grow up. You only have 18 short years with him.
18 summers … 18 birthday cakes … 18 Christmas Eves that will fly away in a mere blink of time.  Read to him … sing to him … prioritize him … laugh with him … pray with Him … dream with him … hold him.

How is it already 2025?!

Well, that break really escalated!

SO much life has happened since December 2023!  I never intended to stop blogging, but 2023 brought a huge move across the country and if I'm being honest it took a bit to get our feet on the ground!  Finding sports teams, doctors, specialists, friends, the house we wanted, you name it!  We bought a house nearby in May 2024 and moved out of our rental house that summer. I can't believe we've been at our 'new' house for over a year already!  It's wild how fast time goes!  The kids are now in 7th and 8th grades -- next year we have a HIGH schooler and our first driver!

Here's a little catch up/recap...

 1) What did you do recent that you’ve never done before? We took the kids to Punta Cana which was new for them, and we went on our first Disney Cruise with my whole family.

2) Did anyone close to you give birth? My youngest sister had a baby!!!  That was the biggest blessing!  It isn't my story to share, but it's safe to say we're all obsessed!  And my niece had her 4th child! :) I'm currently a Great Aunt to 6 {soon to be 7!}

3) Did anyone close to you die? I lost my 'grandpa' Keith in January and my Grandma Laura in March -- 2025 started off quite rough!

4) What places did you visit?

  • Iowa
  • Punta Cana {twice!!}
  • Greece {Athens, Santorini, & Mykonos}
  • Italy {Rome, Florence, Messina, Sicily, Pisa}
  • France {Cannes}
  • Spain {Barcelona}

  • Bahamas
  • Georgia
  • South Carolina {twice!}

  • Grand Cayman

  • Honduras

  • Monaco

5) What dates from 2024 will be etched in your memory forever? 10/23/2024 - Adam & I celebrated our 15th wedding anniversary!

6) What was your biggest achievement this year? Taking my first hosted group on the Mediterranean Cruise.

7) What was your biggest failure?  I've taken the kids to all their appointments, but I haven't been to a doctor yet and I'm very overdue for a mammogram!

8) What was the best thing you bought?  Our house!  We also replaced Adam's car after someone hit him, and my Tahoe since it was falling apart!

9) Where did most of your money go? See question 9! ;)  Plus traveling:)

10) What did you get really, really excited about?  Our Europe trip!  Each time we've had family/friends home visit!

11) What do you wish you had done more of?  Working out!

12) What do you wish you had done less of? Stressing!

13) How did your spend Christmas?  In Iowa! :)  We did our little Christmas the morning of Christmas Eve and then flew to Iowa.  We stayed with my family for the first few days and then Adams for a bit and then out to our friends for a day before flying back to Florida.

14) What was your favorite TV program?  Jordyn and I watched The Summer I Turned Pretty Series together.

15) What did you want and get?   To be car payment free, which wasn't easy since we both got new cars!
