Breastfeeding

For a mom that thought she wouldn't get any milk, this brings tears to my eyes.
Let me start this post by saying I never wrote anything about my breastfeeding experience with Jordyn. At the time is was just too raw and I wasn't about to talk about it let alone write it for the world to read.

Looong story {kinda} short, my plan was to breastfeed until returned to work and then pump and bottle feed.  I hadn't researched much, so I just assumed I would deliver her, my milk would come in, and we would all live happily ever after.  And then I delivered her and my milk didn't come in.  I tried to nurse her and she got a {very} little bit of colostrum {like a few drops!} and then we started her on formula {so she didn't starve!}.  I continued to pump every 2 hours for 20 minutes thinking I would eventually get something.  Over the two weeks I pumped, I produced less than 3 ounces.  It made me really depressed and eventually Adam made me realize it wasn't worth it.  Jordyn was happy and healthy with formula and it was better for everyone if I gave up.  {I was so, so emotional about it.  It wasn't my 'plan' and I hadn't prepared myself not to be able to breastfeed her.  But he was right, it was better for everyone that I just focused on keeping us all happy}.

Fast forward a few months and I was pregnant again.  I knew I really wanted to breastfeed {or at least attempt} again this time.  So, I researched what my options were.  I knew that even though I never produced milk with Jordyn, their was still a chance I could this time around.

I delivered Cullyn and we immediately had skin to skin {kangaroo} time and I tired to nurse him.  My milk didn't come in while I was at the hospital, so I did was is called S&S feeding {thanks to the two AMAZING nurses I had}.  I don't remember what it stands for but basically we formula fed him through a tiny tube.  The bottle of formula was hooked up by my shoulder and a long, skinny tube ran from there to my nipple.  Cullyn then 'breastfed' but it was formula.  This was perfect so that he learned how to latch and suck for when my milk came in, but he was still getting formula {and I knew how much}.

While waiting for my milk to come it I was better about drinking lots of water and consuming enough calories {something I wasn't great with after delivering Jordyn}.  I also took Fenugreek tablets three times a day and ate lots of granola to help my supply.  Luckily, I did get some milk {about 4-14 ounces a day}.  It still wasn't enough, so we were supplementing with formula.  Unfortunately, my supply never picked up no matter now often I pumped or how much water I consumed.

I pumped for four weeks, but one weekend we went back home and I wasn't good about drinking enough water or taking the pills and totally dried up.  It was still sad, but I wasn't completely devastated like I was the first time.  I'm thankful I was able to give him what I was and know that it was better than nothing.  Even though I still wasn't able to breastfeed as long as I wanted, I will still try again next time in hopes that I will produce even more.  {Who knows, maybe by our 5th kid I'll actually be able to breastfeed the entire first year!} :)

On a positive note...I no longer have to hold my arm in front my my chest when I shower {does the pain of the water hitting you ever go away?!} and due to my severe lack of supply, I never experienced 'drying up' like everyone talks about.

{Another} Mom Fail!

Let's take a moment to talk about feeding my daughter.  I try, I really do.  I try to only give her 'natural' sugars, milk or water--no juice, to salt added veggies, fresh fruit, limited crackers/Cheerios, Greek yogurt, etc.  I even tried breastfeeding and although I don't think I ever had a change to write about it, that was a bit, fat, flop! :(

She loves eggs.  We give her eggs about 3 mornings a week.  I know they have cholesterol, but I didn't think it was a huge deal.  Well I finally took the time to research Google how many eggs are too many, since she would eat 2-3 each morning if we let her.  Did you know, they recommend an ADULT have 3-4 eggs a WEEK?!  Knowing my daughter eats about 5 a week, I'm sure you can imagine how I feel right about now!  MOM FAIL! :(

PS...I'm off to by egg whites...

[Baby Gear:Feeding]

If you're not expecting...you'll probably want to skip this post. But I've had a lot of people ask me what we love, what we got but never use, etc. So here's the obligatory 'new mama blogger' series! :)
[See Baby Gear:Basics and Baby Gear:Newborn and Baby Gear:Teething for the beginning of this series]
Top 5 things to purchase for feeding your baby...

[High Chair] I originally posted about it here.  I love this thing.  So portable & easy to clean!  Plus your baby can sit right beside you at the table, not in the corner by herself!  You may want a Bumbo to start.
[Baby Bjorn Bib] There are hundreds of different bibs out there to choose from.  It doesn't necessarily have to be a 'Baby Bjorn' one, but I strongly recommend a plasticy type of one.  The cloth ones just absorb [read: stain] a lot.  I know they're less cute, but they're so easy to clean.  Plus they have a little tray at the bottom to catch all some of your baby's mess.  I like the Baby Bjorn one specifically because it's a little more firm and they can't play with it as much.
[Metal Spoons] I love these little spoons.  They are cheap and turn white to indicate if the food is to warm.  Call me old school, I much prefer the metal handle over plastic.

[Containers] We make our own baby food, so we use lots of containers!  We use these tray to freeze the baby food.  After they're frozen, we throw them in a large ziplock for the most space effective storage.  The day before she eats we put a little frozen food pod into a sealable container in the refridgerator so it's ready to go for the next day.
[Beaba Babycook Food Maker] As I mentioned, we make our own baby food.  We have only used the prepackaged food twice [while traveling long distances] and Jordyn struggled to eat it.  I think it was just too runny of a texture for her.  I have to admit I was not interested in making her food, but this was something my husband wanted and fully took responsibility for.  So, we started...and now, we LOVE it!  I would never go back to the packaged stuff unless we really had to for some reason.  You can control the consistancy of the food and it's really, really simple to make.  If you're on the line, I say GO FOR IT! :)  Oh, and this one is great, although I've never used another one so I don't have anything to compare it to!

Jordyn Lynn [7 Months]

Wow, did we have fun this month or what?!  You traveled to Tulsa/Broken Arrow, Oklahoma for a wedding and South Padre Island/San Antonio, Texas for a beach vacation by car this month [and did amazing might I add!].  So you had your first long distance car ride, first wedding, first hotel stay and first trip to the beach this month!

Another first for you this month is that you're saying 'da-da' all the time!  It breaks my heart that you aren't saying mama, but totally melts my heart that you're such a daddy's girl!  You're also holding your bottle on your own now [talk about a BIG girl!]  You're growing up so fast!
Always on the move now!
You are about 18lbs 1oz and 26" now.  You wear 6 month onsies and clothing, 9 month pajamas and size 2 diapers. You had babyfood for the first time this month.  You love your veggies, especially cauliflower and peas!  So far, you like everything you've tried [peas, carrots, avacado, broccoli, green beans, cauliflower].
Your schedule looks something like this...8a [bottle], 10a [nap], 12p [veggies & bottle], 2p [nap], 4p [bottle], 6p [veggies], and 8p [bottle]. You don't really let us rock you anymore, you prefer to me set in your crib to go to bed [around 8/9p].
Love you to the moon & back baby girl,
Mama and Daddy
Silly girl!  Lots of teething faces! :)

And yes, in case you wondered she does like to eat my calendar! :)
